Workshop Location and Accommodation Recommendations

This workshop will take place in Yogyakarta, Indonesia's "City of Arts," where participants will learn in the studios of both instructors. Phase One will be held at Ki Pono Wiguno’s mask workshop, Sanggar Warnowaskito Pelestari Topeng Klasik (ꦱꦁꦒꦂꦮꦂꦤꦮꦱ꧀ꦏꦶꦛ), located in a quiet village near Yogyakarta’s city center, offering a culturally rich and serene environment. Phase Two will move to Agung Gunawan’s Agung Dance Center, near the Prambanan Hindu temple complex, approximately an hour’s drive from the city center. For convenience, we recommend that participants stay in hotels or guesthouses near Prambanan during this phase. We can assist in booking accommodations for the entire journey. Please see below for detailed accommodation suggestions.

About Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta, located on the island of Java, Indonesia, is known as the "City of Arts." This city is rich in history and cultural heritage, blending traditional arts with contemporary creations. It is a meeting point of ancient relics and modern culture, home to the iconic Borobudur and Prambanan temples, and a vibrant center of contemporary and traditional artistic expression.

Yogyakarta’s intense artistic atmosphere attracts artists and visitors from around the world. The city is dotted with various art workshops, galleries, and museums that showcase various art forms, from traditional to modern. The local art forms, such as Javanese mask carving, batik textile dyeing, and shadow puppetry, are especially beloved and celebrated. As a hub of culture and creativity, Yogyakarta hosts numerous international festivals and exhibitions each year, such as the biennial Pesta Boneka International Puppet Festival, drawing artists from across the globe to exchange ideas and showcase their work.

Amid this vibrant artistic environment, our workshop will provide a unique learning and creative experience, immersing you in Yogyakarta's art and culture and offering an in-depth exploration of this city of the arts.

Currently, Yogyakarta does not have direct international flights but can be reached via transfers in Jakarta, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. The airport is approximately two hours from the city center. If needed, we can arrange airport transfers (transportation fees are covered by the participants).

We recommend staying in the Tirtodipuran area, an art district near the city center, during Phase One. This area is well-equipped with essential amenities, providing a peaceful environment within the city’s vibrant setting. It offers an inspiring artistic atmosphere with various galleries and artist studios. Due to the area’s popularity among international visitors, English is also widely understood.

We will arrange daily transportation from Tulips Hotel to the workshop location for participants' convenience. Therefore, we suggest selecting accommodations nearby for easy access to the shuttle.
